Holy Trinity Cathedral

Holy Trinity Cathedral (Катедрален храм Света Троица) is the main Bulgarian Orthodox church in Ruse, a large three-nave basilica with a prominent bell tower visible from Freedom Square. The interior has been decorated over the decades with iconostasis carvings and wall paintings typical of the late Bulgarian revival style. The crypt contains the tomb of Ekzarh Yosif I, the first head of the Bulgarian Exarchate, who had connections to Ruse.

The cathedral is an active parish church and holds services throughout the week. Visitors are welcome outside service times. The church is a short walk east of Freedom Square; combined with the Opera House and Pantheon nearby, it forms part of a natural walking circuit through Ruse's central monuments.

A story
Holy Trinity Cathedral is the principal Orthodox church of Ruse, consecrated in 1882 — just four years after Bulgarian liberation. The timing was deliberate: the construction of a major Orthodox cathedral was one of the first symbolic acts of the newly liberated Bulgarian community in Ruse, asserting religious and cultural identity after centuries of Ottoman administration. The church was built on the site of an earlier Orthodox place of worship that had functioned under restrictions during the Ottoman period.
