Ruse Opera and Philharmonic

The Ruse Opera and Philharmonic Society performs at the Sava Ognyanov Dramatic Theatre building and at its own hall near Freedom Square. The opera company has a full professional ensemble and stages a season of standard repertoire productions — primarily Italian and German opera — alongside operettas and orchestral concerts. Ticket prices are very modest by Western European standards.

The philharmonic orchestra performs chamber and symphonic programmes through the season. For travellers who enjoy classical music and happen to be in Ruse when a performance is scheduled, this is a genuine treat — a provincial opera house with professional standards, performed in an intimate setting, at prices that are almost comically low compared to Vienna or London. Check the programme at the opera box office on Freedom Square.

A story
Ruse has been a centre of operatic performance in Bulgaria since the late 19th century, when its wealthy European-oriented merchant class supported travelling Italian and Austro-Hungarian opera companies. The formal Ruse Opera company was founded in 1949, making it one of the oldest regional opera houses in Bulgaria. The city's German and Italian communities, present from the mid-19th century through to World War II, left a cultural legacy that made operatic performance a matter of local prestige.
