Alderney Society Museum

The Alderney Society Museum is the island's only museum, housed in St Anne's old schoolhouse. It covers the island's natural history, archaeology, and social history, with sections on the German occupation that are among the most thoughtful treatments of that difficult period anywhere in the Channel Islands. The collection includes Iron Age finds from the island (Alderney has extensive pre-Roman archaeological sites), Victorian photographs, and objects from the occupation years.

The museum is small but well-curated and entirely run by volunteers. Opening hours are limited — check locally before making a special trip — but it's worth fitting into an afternoon in St Anne. The archaeological section in particular, covering finds from Longis Common and the nearby Iron Age sites, gives Alderney an historical depth that its small size doesn't immediately suggest.

A story
The museum is housed in the old school building in St Anne, built in 1790. The natural history collection — assembled over a century by island residents — includes specimens and observations that have contributed to scientific understanding of Alderney's unusually diverse bird and marine life.
