Fort Houmet Herbe is one of the small defensive works that make Alderney's coast so distinctive. The island has an unusually dense military landscape, and this fort helps show how every bay and approach was once watched, measured, and fortified.
It is a specialist sight, but a good one if you are walking the coast or trying to understand Alderney beyond beaches and birdlife. The pleasure is partly in the route: sea air, stonework, and the sense of a small island built as a fortress.
