The Jersey Museum on Pier Road tells the island's story from its Neolithic settlers to the German Occupation, via the medieval period, the privateering years, and the Victorian boom. The building is a converted merchant's townhouse and its own architecture is part of the exhibit. One wing reconstructs a Victorian family home in period detail — furniture, fittings, and all — giving a vivid sense of prosperous island life before the internal combustion engine arrived.
The art gallery section shows Jersey artists alongside maritime paintings and portrait commissions that record the island's merchant class at its peak. The museum is run by Jersey Heritage and admission covers several of the organisation's other sites around the island. Liberation Square, where the museum stands, has a bronze tableau commemorating the liberation from German occupation on 9 May 1945.
