Pilcher Monument

The Pilcher Monument is a small obelisk on the southwestern cliffs of Sark, erected in memory of a London merchant who drowned in a boating accident here in 1868. It is worth visiting not so much for the monument itself as for the coastal scenery — the cliffs on this part of the island are among the highest on Sark, and the view south toward Little Sark and out into the Atlantic is excellent.

The path from the village takes about 40 minutes on foot or 20 minutes by bicycle. The cliffs below are a nesting site for seabirds in spring and early summer.

A story
J.G. Pilcher, in whose memory the obelisk was erected, was a London oil merchant who drowned when his yacht was wrecked on the rocks below in 1868. The monument was paid for by his family and has stood on the clifftop for over 150 years, an oddly touching memorial in the middle of nowhere.
