Sark Lighthouse

Sark Lighthouse stands on Point Robert at the island's northeast corner, on the lip of dramatic cliffs that drop straight into the sea. The walk from the village takes about 30 minutes through farmland and then along the cliff path. The lighthouse itself is not generally open to visitors, but the coastal scenery on the walk is excellent.

The headland gives views across to the Blanchard Rock, a notorious hazard for shipping that the lighthouse was built to warn against. On clear days you can see Guernsey to the northwest and the coast of Normandy to the east.

A story
Point Robert, where the lighthouse stands, was the location of Operation Basalt in 1942 — a small British commando raid to capture German prisoners for intelligence. The raiders killed one German soldier and captured another before returning by sea. The reprisal was the shackling of British prisoners of war in German camps, provoking a chain of prisoner mistreatment on both sides.
