Kraljevica Shipyard

Working shipyard founded in 1729, one of Europe's oldest

The Kraljevica Shipyard was founded by imperial decree in 1729 to build warships for the Habsburg Adriatic fleet, making it one of the oldest continuously operating shipyards in Europe. Charles VI signed the founding charter; the early yards built galleys and frigates, and the works expanded through the 19th century. In the 20th century the yard turned to merchant ships, ferries, and fishing vessels.

The shipyard is a working industrial site and not open to the public, but it is visible from the waterfront promenade and from the castle paths above. The contrast between the medieval fortresses on the hill and the slipways below is what gives Kraljevica its character.
