Eating Out on Pag Island

Pag's food scene is built around its own distinctive products. Paški sir (sheep's cheese) and paška jagnjetina (Pag lamb, roasted whole on the spit) are the island's signature dishes — both derive their character from the island's sparse, sea-spray-seasoned pasture. Any restaurant worth visiting on Pag will feature both.

In Pag Town, several family-run konobas on and near the main square serve honest Dalmatian food: whole roast lamb, fresh fish grilled simply, Pag cheese platters, and house wine. The quality is consistent and prices are reasonable by Croatian standards.

Novalja has a broader and more tourist-oriented restaurant scene, with everything from fast food to mid-range fish restaurants along the waterfront. Quality is variable. For the lamb, seek out restaurants in the villages rather than the seafront strip.

The most memorable food experience on the island is buying cheese and lamb directly from producers around Kolan and Pag Town — paški sir bought at a farm tastes different from the same cheese sold in a supermarket in Zagreb.
