The Petar Kružić Stairway climbs from central Rijeka up to Trsat, turning a practical ascent into one of the city's best historic walks. The route began in the 16th century as a pilgrim path to the shrine at Trsat and was expanded over time with chapels and devotional markers along the climb.
It is a workout, but a rewarding one. Start near the Rječina, take your time on the steps, and use the pauses to look back over the roofs, port, and Kvarner Gulf. At the top, Trsat Castle and the Marian shrine make the climb feel like a proper arrival rather than just a shortcut.
