Medieval Mediterranean Garden of St Lawrence Monastery

A small walled garden tucked behind the Franciscan monastery of St Lawrence, reconstructed in 2007 from the original fifteenth-century plan. The beds are laid out in a strict geometric cross with a fountain at the centre, and the plants are the ones medieval monks would have grown — sage, rosemary, lavender, hyssop, rue, plus herbs used in cooking and for medicine.

The café at the entrance serves teas brewed from the garden's own herbs and small pastries. It is one of the quietest spots in town, with a calm courtyard atmosphere that makes a useful break from the steep alleys outside. Open in the warmer months; closed in winter.
