Land Gate (Kopnena Vrata)

The most monumental of the four surviving gates into the walled old town, the Land Gate was built by the Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli in 1543. A central triumphal arch is flanked by two smaller pedestrian arches, with the Venetian lion of St Mark above and an equestrian relief of the city's patron St Chrysogonus on horseback.

It is the standard photograph spot for Zadar arrivals, and is best seen from the small Fosa Harbour outside the walls, where the medieval defences are clearly visible. Sanmicheli, who also designed the walls of Verona, did some of his best work here.
