May, June and September are the best months. Daytime temperatures sit in the 22–28°C range, the sea is warm enough for swimming, and the old town is busy but not unbearable.
July and August are very hot and very crowded. Restaurants need reservations, the islands fill with day-trippers, and prices climb everywhere.
October to April is the off-season. The light is beautiful, the prices drop dramatically, and the locals reclaim the town — but many restaurants and tour operators shut, and the wind (bura) off the mountains can be fierce.
The annual highlight is the Musical Evenings in St Donatus festival of early music, running through July and August in the church of the same name.
