Old Town and Latrán District

The historic centre of Český Krumlov is small enough to cross on foot in fifteen minutes, but it rewards slower exploration. The medieval street plan is largely intact — narrow lanes, archways, and small squares that curve with the river. The whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the preservation is exceptional.

Latrán, the elongated street connecting the castle gate to the town, is one of the most atmospheric corridors in the old town. It was the main artery in the medieval settlement and still has the feel of a working street rather than a pure tourist zone. Walk it early in the morning before the crowds arrive.

The views back toward the castle from the far bank of the Vltava — reached by crossing the small wooden bridges — are the ones that appear on every postcard. The river bend that makes Český Krumlov so photogenic is best seen from the southern bank near the weir. There are also good viewpoints from the castle gardens above.

The town is genuinely pleasant to wander without a checklist. Ducking into courtyards, crossing bridges, and following the river path around the loop reveals details that a hurried tour misses entirely.
