Český Krumlov

UNESCO-listed Czech river town wrapped by the Vltava beneath a vast castle complex.

Český Krumlov is one of the most strikingly beautiful small towns in Central Europe. A tight loop of the Vltava river almost completely encircles the old town, and above it rises a vast castle complex — the second largest in the Czech Republic after Prague Castle. The entire historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The town has around 13,000 residents but attracts vastly more visitors, especially in summer when the streets fill with day-trippers from Prague (about 3 hours by bus or train). The experience is best if you stay overnight — the atmosphere after the tour buses leave in the late afternoon is completely different.

The castle (Státní hrad a zámek Český Krumlov) has a magnificent Baroque theater that still retains its original stage machinery and scenery — one of the best preserved in Europe. The castle gardens are worth exploring, and the tower offers exceptional views. Several guided tours run through different parts of the complex.

The town is also an activity center: kayaking and rafting on the Vltava are popular in summer, and the surrounding countryside is good for cycling.
