Battle of Náchod Monument

On the ridge above Václavice, a few kilometres east of town, stand the monuments to the soldiers killed in the Battle of Náchod. Several stone obelisks and crosses are scattered across the battlefield, marking mass graves and individual regiments — both Austrian and Prussian.

The site is open landscape rather than a museum: a quiet walk through farmland and woods, with information panels in Czech and German. Worth combining with a visit to one of the bunkers for a sense of how often this border has been fought over.

A story
The Prussian victory here on 27 June 1866 was the first major action of the Austro-Prussian War. Three days later the Austrians lost again at Königgrätz, and the political balance of central Europe tipped decisively toward Berlin and the future German Empire.
