The Adršpach-Teplice Rocks, an extraordinary maze of sandstone towers about 40 km west, are the standout excursion from Náchod. Across the border in Poland, Kudowa-Zdrój offers a faded spa town with mineral colonnades and the Skull Chapel in the Czermna suburb. Further afield, Hradec Králové — the regional capital, about 50 km — has a striking Modernist core by Josef Gočár, and Náchod's writer son Josef Škvorecký made it the literary backdrop of a generation.
