Spanish Synagogue

Moorish Revival synagogue with the most ornate interior in Josefov

Address Vězeňská 1, Prague 1 (Josefov)

The Spanish Synagogue (1868) is the most architecturally flamboyant of the six historic synagogues in Josefov, Prague's old Jewish quarter. Its Moorish Revival interior — named after the Alhambra, which it visually imitates — is covered in geometric gilded stucco from floor to ceiling, with a riot of arabesques, interlocking patterns, and rich colors that stop visitors in their tracks.

The synagogue stands on the site of the Old Shul, the oldest Jewish house of worship in Prague. Today it is part of the Jewish Museum complex and tells the history of Czech Jews from the Enlightenment through to the Holocaust. Franz Kafka's father was a member of this congregation.
