Utzon Centre

Jørn Utzon's final building — a waterfront architecture and design centre

The Utzon Centre sits on Aalborg's Limfjord waterfront and was the final architectural project of Jørn Utzon, the Danish architect who designed the Sydney Opera House. Born in Aalborg in 1918, Utzon designed the centre in his late eighties as a gift to his home city. The building opened in 2008, the year of his death.

The centre hosts changing exhibitions on architecture, design, and art with a Nordic focus. The permanent presentation covers Utzon's life and work — from early projects through the Sydney Opera House controversy to his late Danish works. The building itself, with its folded roof structure and views across the Limfjord, is a modest but characterful work. The cafe on the waterfront terrace is open in summer.

A story
Jørn Utzon, who designed the Sydney Opera House and won the Pritzker Prize in 2003, was born in Aalborg in 1918. The Utzon Centre was his last project — he worked on the design in his late eighties and died in 2008, the year the building opened. He never saw the completed structure.
