Just outside Ærøskøbing, on the sandy strand of Vester Strand, stands a row of small wooden beach huts in pastel greens, blues, yellows, and pinks. They are one of the most photographed sights on Ærø and have a slightly fairy-tale quality, lined up against the dunes and the open sea.
The huts are not commercially rented and remain in private ownership, which is why they have kept their character. Walk out from Ærøskøbing harbour along the coast path — about 15 minutes — and you arrive at the row in the dunes. The beach itself is good for swimming on summer days, with shallow water and a gentle slope.
