HEART Herning Museum of Contemporary Art

HEART is Herning's most convincing cultural stop: a contemporary art museum in a low, white Steven Holl building on the edge of Birk. The architecture matters as much as the exhibitions, with curved roof forms, white concrete, and galleries built for changing shows rather than a fixed march through art history.

The collection has roots in the town's textile patronage and Danish postwar art, but the programme is broader, with contemporary Danish and international exhibitions. Pair it with the neighbouring Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelt Museum and Elia rather than treating it as a stand-alone stop.

A story
HEART grew out of Herning's textile industry. Aage Damgaard, a shirt manufacturer, supported artists around his Angli factory, and the museum's Steven Holl building keeps that memory in its fabric-textured white concrete and roof forms often read as folded shirt sleeves.
