Herning sits in central Jutland, a practical Danish town whose old textile wealth has been turned into art, events, and sport. It is not a postcard town, and that is useful to know before you come. The best parts are specific: a serious contemporary-art cluster at Birk, a huge fair and arena complex, and the flat heathland sense of being in the middle of Jutland.
The strongest reason to visit is east of the centre, where HEART stands near the Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelt Museum, the sculpture park, the geometric gardens, and Elia. It is one of Denmark's odder cultural landscapes: shirt-factory patronage, Danish modern art, Steven Holl architecture, and a black steel monument that sometimes spits fire.
South of town, MCH Messecenter Herning, Jyske Bank Boxen, and MCH Arena bring in crowds for trade fairs, concerts, handball, football, and international events. If nothing is on, Herning can feel quiet. If something is on, it suddenly makes sense as a town built around gatherings.
