The museum itself occupies a merchant's house from 1619 on Nørregade, which has had several lives: grocery store, garrison billet, poorhouse, and finally museum since 1909. The building is as interesting as the collection.
The permanent displays cover local history from the Stone Age through to the modern era. Highlights include the coin hoard, an exhibition on the ill-fated 17th-century warship Dannebroge, and material from a 4000 BC multiple-burial site at Strøby Egede nearby. The archaeology rooms are genuinely good — concise, well-labelled, and not trying to do too much. Children get in free.
