Køge is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Denmark, sitting on the shore of Køge Bay about 40 km south of Copenhagen. The old harbour town grew prosperous in the 15th century, and a walk through the cobbled streets today shows how well that prosperity has been maintained.
The town claims the oldest dated house in Denmark — a timber-framed building from 1527 on Kirkestræde. The streets around it are full of well-preserved half-timbered houses, charming courtyards, and several churches. Both the old harbour and the newer marina offer pleasant walks along the bay.
The Køge Museum has a good local art and history collection, and the town makes an easy day trip from Copenhagen by S-train.
