Akseltorv is Kolding's main square and the natural centre of the old town. The square is flanked by good cafes and restaurants and connects to the pedestrianised shopping streets that run toward the railway station. It is a functional, pleasant space — not spectacular by Danish standards, but animated by the flow of people through the town centre and by the Saturday market that takes place here in the warmer months.
The buildings around the square include a mix of older Danish merchant houses and more recent additions. The Church of Saint Nicholas (Sankt Nikolai Kirke) stands a short walk to the south, a large Gothic church that has served the town since the medieval period. The churchyard has some old stones and is quiet in comparison to the busy square.
