Tranekær Castle is first documented in 1231, making it one of Denmark's oldest continuously inhabited castles. It has been owned by the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family since 1659. The current red-plastered two-winged building dates from an 1859–1863 reconstruction and is a protected national heritage site. The castle itself is privately owned and not open to the public inside, but the grounds are freely accessible — an 83-hectare landscape park of woodland, a castle lake, and estate fields that have been handed over to the art and nature organisation TICKON since 1993.
