Balka Beach

Balka is a small seaside village about 3 kilometres southwest of Nexø, and its beach is among the finest on Bornholm. The sand is clean and fine, the water shallow and relatively warm by Baltic standards, and the setting — a gentle curve backed by low dunes and a few summer houses — is easy and uncrowded outside July.

The beach is well set up for families, with facilities including changing rooms and a kiosk. A short walk south leads to Snogbæk and the rockier stretches of the south coast. In summer, Balka fills with Danish holidaymakers, but it rarely feels overwhelmed. From Nexø it is accessible by bicycle along a flat coastal path, which is the nicest way to arrive.

A story
Balka is unusual among Bornholm's beaches for its fine white sand — most of the island's coastline is rocky or pebbly. The beach faces southwest, which gives it some shelter from the prevailing Baltic wind and makes it reliably warmer than beaches on the exposed northern coast.
