Gryet Megaliths

About 4 kilometres west of Nexø, near the village of Bodilsker, the megalith site at Gryet is one of the most impressive and least-visited prehistoric sites on Bornholm. Tall upright stones stand among the trees in a small wood, some several metres high, giving the site a genuinely atmospheric quality — especially in the morning mist.

Bornholm has a remarkable concentration of prehistoric monuments relative to its size, and Gryet represents the standing stone tradition rather than the more common dolmens found elsewhere in Denmark. The site is easily combined with a bicycle ride through the Bornholm countryside. Access is on foot from a small car park on the road between Nexø and Bodilsker.

A story
Gryet is one of Denmark's largest collections of standing stones, yet it appears on almost no tourist maps. The megaliths were long misunderstood by local people as a natural geological formation; archaeological study in the 20th century confirmed they were deliberately erected, likely during the Neolithic period around 3000–2000 BCE.
