Randers Regnskov (Tropical Zoo)

Randers Regnskov (Randers Rainforest) is one of Denmark's most original attraction concepts: three interconnected glass domes housing tropical ecosystems built over the Gudenå river in the middle of the city. Each dome represents a different climate zone — the Americas, Africa, and Asia — with the temperature, humidity, and flora calibrated to support the animals and plants of that region.

The collection is serious rather than gimmicky. Among the highlights are a free-flying bird section, large reptiles, primates, and the tropical fish and amphibian displays that appeal to adults as much as to children. The domes are impressive in winter, when the contrast between the Danish cold outside and the tropical humidity inside is particularly striking. Allow two to three hours for a thorough visit. The zoo sits on the riverbank and is easily combined with a walk along the Gudenå.

A story
Randers Regnskov was built directly over the Gudenå river — the domes span the water, so the rainforest sits on top of a Danish waterway. The three climate zones (South America, Africa, Asia) are connected by bridges and walkways, and the ambition of the engineering is matched by the collection: anacondas, pygmy hippos, fruit bats, and free-flying tropical birds in a controlled humidity environment that feels genuinely unlike anything else in Scandinavia.
