Intercity buses and trains
Buses are the backbone of intercity travel. Lux Express and several regional operators connect Tallinn to Tartu, Pärnu, Narva, Viljandi, and smaller towns. The Tallinn–Tartu journey takes about 2.5 hours and costs around €10. Buy tickets online at tpilet.ee or at the bus station.
State rail operator Elron runs comfortable trains on the main routes: Tallinn–Tartu, Tallinn–Narva, Tallinn–Pärnu, and Tallinn–Viljandi. Trains are punctual and good value.
In Tallinn
The Old Town is compact and best explored on foot. Tallinn has an extensive bus, tram, and trolleybus network. Public transport is free for residents registered in Tallinn; visitors pay per ride using the Tallinn Card or a contactless bank card. Taxis and Bolt (the local ride-hailing app) are cheap by Western European standards.
Islands and ferries
Regular ferries connect the mainland to Saaremaa (via Muhu), Hiiumaa, and smaller islands. Saaremaa is reached by ferry from Virtsu (about 30 minutes), with frequent crossings run by Tuule Liinid. Hiiumaa ferries leave from Rohuküla. Book in advance in summer, especially for car spaces.
Car hire
Renting a car is the best way to explore the islands and national parks at your own pace. Roads are good, traffic outside Tallinn is light, and fuel is reasonably priced. All major rental companies operate from Tallinn Airport.
