The Kalevi-Liiva dunes are an unusual natural feature for northern Estonia — a cluster of sand dunes formed by glacial outwash and subsequently shaped by wind coming off the Gulf of Finland. The dunes are modest in height but striking in context, rising out of the surrounding pine forest about 4.5 km south of Kaberneeme village.
The area is a popular spot for picnics and informal recreation among Estonians but almost unknown to visitors. The contrast between the pale sand, the dark pines, and the grey-blue sea visible through the trees makes for good photography. A rough track leads down from the dunes to a small stretch of beach. Combine with a walk north along the coast to Kaberneeme for a half-day outing.
