Café Maiasmokk is the oldest café in Estonia, opened in 1864 on Pikk Street and still occupying its original premises with the original interior largely intact — mirrored walls, dark wood, marble tables, and glass display cases full of marzipan confections. The café has been making marzipan in-house for its entire existence; Tallinn marzipan (not unlike Lübeck's) was historically a major export product of the city.
The café is a genuine piece of living history: the interiors have barely changed in a century, the service is old-fashioned in the best sense, and the pastries and hot chocolate are excellent. A mandatory stop for anyone interested in the continuity of Tallinn's mercantile culture from the medieval Hanseatic period to today.
