Valgeranna

Quiet beach village near Pärnu, named for its white sand backed by pine forest.

Valgeranna is a quiet beach village on Estonia's west coast, about 8 km west of Pärnu along the shore of Pärnu Bay. The name means "white beach" in Estonian, and the description is accurate: roughly 500 metres of fine white sand backed by fragrant pine forest, with shallow, calm water that stays warm enough to swim in from June to August.

For most Estonians, Valgeranna is a peaceful alternative to the busier Pärnu beach crowds. The village is small — a handful of summer houses, a campsite, a golf course — but the beach itself is genuinely beautiful, and the surrounding pine-forested coast has a particular Baltic stillness that is hard to find closer to town. The Audru Polder Nature Reserve just to the northwest adds another reason to come, drawing birdwatchers and walkers who want something beyond the sand.

Getting here without a car requires a bus from Pärnu, a journey of around 20 minutes. Most visitors come for a day; the campsite and a few guesthouses allow a longer stay if the slower pace suits you.

Beaches

Valgeranna's beach is the reason most people come. The Valgeranna Beach stretches about 500 metres along Pärnu Bay, sheltered by pine trees and with water shallow enough for children to wade far out from shore. The sand is genuinely white — the name "Valgeranna" means white beach — and the setting among pines is more attractive than the open municipal beach at Pärnu.

Getting There

Valgeranna is about 8 km west of Pärnu along the coastal road. By bus, take a local service from Pärnu bus station — the journey takes around 20 minutes and runs several times a day in summer. By car from Pärnu, take the road toward Audru and follow signs west along the coast; the drive is straightforward and takes about 15 minutes.

Pärnu itself is well-connected: regular express buses run from Tallinn (around 2 hours) and Tartu (around 2.5 hours). There is no direct connection from Tallinn or Tartu to Valgeranna — you change at Pärnu.

Things to Do

Valgeranna is a small place, and the draw is fundamentally the same wherever you look: beach, forest, and the slow rhythm of the Estonian coast. The Valgeranna Beach is the main event, but the Audru Polder Nature Reserve to the northwest is genuinely rewarding for anyone interested in birds or wetland landscapes. The Valgeranna Golf Club is one of the better-established courses in western Estonia for those inclined toward the game.
