Pärnu

Estonia's summer capital, a relaxed spa city with a broad beach and small old centre.

Pärnu is Estonia's summer capital, a low-key resort city on the country's southwest coast where the beach matters more than the skyline. In July, Estonians come for warm shallow water, long evenings, spa treatments, and the easy ritual of walking from the old centre through Beach Park to Pärnu Beach.

The city is gentle rather than dramatic. Its old core has a few surviving fortification fragments, churches, cafes, and museums, but Pärnu's real charm is the way the town thins out toward the sea. Wooden villas, sanatorium architecture, parks, and bicycle paths give it a faded resort-town grace. It is much less polished than a Baltic capital, and better for it.

Come in summer if you want the classic Pärnu experience. Outside the season it becomes quiet, almost sleepy, but the Pärnu Mud Baths, museums, and old-town walks still make it worth a stop between Tallinn, Haapsalu, and the western islands.
