Vormsi Landscape Conservation Area

The Vormsi Landscape Conservation Area covers more than 2,400 hectares of the island — alvar meadows, juniper scrub, coastal pine, and shallow shore. The reserve protects what is left of the open, grazed landscape that the Estonian Swedes maintained for centuries before the Soviet evacuation.

Marked trails run through the reserve from the parking areas near Rumpo and the southern coast. The Rumpo trail in particular is good for birdwatching — the shallow bays here are a feeding stop on the East Atlantic migration route, and barnacle geese pass through by the thousand in spring.
