Dúgvan War Museum

The Dúgvan War Museum occupies a preserved Nissen hut from the British military installation that operated on Vágar during World War II. Britain occupied the Faroe Islands in April 1940, days after Germany invaded Denmark, to prevent the strategically positioned islands from falling under German control. The base on Vágar supported RAF operations and helped defend Atlantic convoy routes.

The museum is small but focused: uniforms, weapons, documents, and personal effects tell the story of the occupation from both the British and Faroese perspectives. The Nissen hut itself — the corrugated half-cylinder design that became standard military accommodation — is part of the exhibit.

story: "When British forces arrived in April 1940, local Faroese fishermen initially mistook the warships for Germans. The occupying troops were welcomed once identities were sorted, and many British soldiers formed lasting friendships with island families during the four-year posting."
