Gásadalur

Gásadalur is a small village of around 15 people on the northwestern tip of Vágar, perched above the ocean with Mykines visible across the water. For most of its history it was one of the most isolated settlements in the Faroes — the post came over the mountain on foot and supplies arrived by boat. That changed in 2004 when a tunnel was blasted through the mountain connecting Gásadalur to the rest of Vágar.

From Miðvágur the drive takes about 15 minutes. The village sits above a cliff, and the waterfall Múlafossur drops directly from the fields into the sea just outside the last houses — the kind of dramatic geography that elsewhere would have a viewing platform and a car park; here it is simply where the land ends.

The walk out to the cliff beyond the village, with views of Tindhólmur and the Mykines bird stacks, takes less than half an hour. Puffins are plentiful in summer.
