The heart of neoclassical Helsinki, dominated by the gleaming white Lutheran Cathedral on its north side. The square was laid out in the 1820s by the German-born architect Carl Ludwig Engel, who also designed the cathedral, the Government Palace, and the main building of the University of Helsinki that flank it. A statue of Tsar Alexander II stands in the centre — a reminder that for a century Finland was a Russian grand duchy.
