Inari is genuinely remote — 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, on Highway 4 between Ivalo and the Norwegian border at Utsjoki.
By air. Ivalo Airport (IVL) is the nearest, 40 kilometres south of Inari village. Finnair operates daily direct flights from Helsinki, taking about an hour and forty minutes. The airport bus from Ivalo to Inari runs in connection with the main flights; a taxi costs around €70 one way.
By bus. Long-distance buses run from Rovaniemi (around 5 hours) and from Helsinki (an overnight, 14 hours or so) up the spine of Lapland to Inari, continuing to Utsjoki and Kirkenes in Norway. Booking ahead online is straightforward.
By car. The drive from Rovaniemi (the nearest major town) takes around 4 hours on Highway 4. The road is paved, well-maintained, and quiet outside the summer; in winter expect ice and reindeer. Rentals are available at all the southern Lapland airports.
Bordering Norway. Northbound Highway 4 continues into Norway at Utsjoki, with onward connections to Karasjok, Kirkenes, and the Tana valley.
