Inari

Northern Lapland municipality and Sámi cultural centre beside Lake Inari and Arctic wilderness areas.

Inari is a vast, sparsely populated municipality in northern Lapland — in area it's one of the largest municipalities in Finland, but most of it is Arctic wilderness. The small village of Inari itself sits on the southern shore of Lake Inari, Finland's third-largest lake.

The main reason to come here is nature: the Lemmenjoki National Park (Finland's largest), the Urho Kekkonen National Park, and several designated wilderness areas are wholly or partly in Inari municipality. The landscape is fell, forest, and water.

Inari is also the most important centre of Sámi culture in Finland. The Siida museum covers the history, culture, and way of life of the Finnish Sámi with serious depth, and the Sámi Cultural Centre Sajos in the village hosts events, traditional crafts, and exhibitions. If you have any interest in Arctic indigenous culture, this is worth the journey north.

Reindeer are everywhere on the roads; drive carefully.
