Lake Jyväsjärvi is one of the most central urban lakes in Finland — it sits literally in the middle of Jyväskylä, surrounded by parkland, cycling paths, and the city's harbour district. On a summer evening, the lakeside paths and cafés fill with locals cycling, jogging, and enjoying the long northern twilight. The lake's southern shore has a sandy beach and swimming area used heavily in summer.
The Kuokkala Bridge, one of the longest pedestrian bridges in Finland, spans the southern end of the lake and has become something of a design landmark for the city. Walking or cycling the complete loop around the lake — about 5 kilometres — is the best way to understand the city's relationship with its water. In winter, the lake freezes and becomes a popular skating route.
