Vaskiluoto Island

Vaskiluoto is an island immediately in front of Vaasa's city centre, connected by a short causeway. In summer it is the heart of Vaasa's outdoor life: a campsite, a beach, a marina, and the now-closed Wasalandia amusement park occupy different corners of it. The walk across the causeway and around the island takes an hour at a gentle pace and gives you a very different view of the city — the grid of Setterberg's planned town seen from the water, the Gulf of Bothnia stretching west toward Sweden.

The island's western shore catches the evening light well and has some of the best sunset views in the city. In winter, when the sea sometimes freezes, it is possible to walk across the ice to even smaller islands beyond Vaskiluoto — a quintessentially Finnish thing to do.
