One of the best collections of modern and contemporary art in France outside Paris. The permanent collection holds over 20,000 works — paintings, sculptures, photography, design objects — with particular strengths in post-war French and American art. Picasso, Léger, Warhol, and Rauschenberg are all well represented, alongside a design wing that makes sense of the city's UNESCO Creative City designation.
The museum is located in Saint-Priest-en-Jarez, just north of the city centre, in a purpose-built building from 1987. It is small enough to cover in two hours but substantial enough to reward a longer visit. Entrance is free on the first Sunday of each month.
