Stade Geoffroy-Guichard

Home ground of AS Saint-Étienne, France's most decorated football club, and one of the most atmospheric stadiums in the country. The Chaudron holds around 42,000 and gets genuinely loud on big match days. ASSE have won the French league ten times, and the club remains a genuine source of civic pride in a city that has lost much of its industrial identity.

Tickets for regular league matches are easy to come by and reasonably priced. The stadium was one of the venues for Euro 2016, which left it with upgraded facilities. Tours of the stadium and dressing rooms are available on non-match days — a worthwhile 90 minutes for anyone interested in football history or French popular culture.

A story
The stadium's nickname, the Chaudron — the cauldron — comes from the noise generated by its covered stands on three sides. At a packed European night game in the 1970s, visiting journalists could not hear each other speak above the crowd. ASSE were European Cup finalists in 1976, losing to Bayern Munich, and the atmosphere in the Chaudron that spring is still talked about by fans who were there.
