Place Pélissière

Restored medieval square with the famous Cyrano statue

The Place Pélissière is the largest of the squares in Bergerac's old town and one of the most successful pieces of urban restoration in the region. Until the 1970s it was a derelict warren of tobacco warehouses; today it is a stone-paved open square surrounded by restored medieval houses, half-timbered facades, and a small Romanesque church on its upper side.

The square is anchored by a bronze statue of Cyrano de Bergerac — the better and more dramatic of the town's two Cyrano statues. In the evening the surrounding cafes spill out under the plane trees, and on summer Saturdays the square hosts open-air concerts and small markets.

A story
The bronze Cyrano, with his oversized nose and feather-plumed hat, is the work of the sculptor Mauro Corda and was installed in 2005. It is the second statue of Cyrano in town — an older one stands on the Place de la Myrpe — and is part of a slightly tongue-in-cheek local industry that claims a writer who was never actually from Bergerac.
