Positioned close to the bullring, the Bar des Arènes is the natural gathering point before and after course landaise contests. On fight days the bar fills early with local aficionados discussing form and teams, and it stays busy long after the arenas have emptied. The decor runs to posters and photographs of écarteurs past, which makes it an informal museum of local sporting culture as much as a drinking establishment.
Outside of festival season, it is a quiet neighbourhood bar where the television is usually showing sport and the regulars are generous with conversation if you show the slightest interest in the local traditions. A good place to get a straight answer about when the next festival events are scheduled.
