Périgueux makes a sensible base for the northern Dordogne. The prehistoric caves at Les Eyzies, the cliff-cut village of La Roque-Gageac and the wine town of Bergerac are all within easy reach by car. Sarlat — the postcard-perfect medieval town — is just under an hour to the south-east and best visited mid-week to avoid the worst of the summer crowds.
