Périgueux packs two worlds into a compact old town: the Byzantine-domed cathedral and medieval lanes of the Puy-Saint-Front quarter, and the Gallo-Roman remains of ancient Vesunna a few minutes' walk to the south-west. A day is enough to see the headline sights; two lets you slow down for the markets and the river walk along the Isle.
