Porte d'Arroux

Roman northern gate of Augustodunum, intact since the 1st century BC

The Porte d'Arroux is the northern gate of the original Roman city, built in the 1st century BC and remarkably well preserved for its 2,000-year age. Like the Porte Saint-André to the east, it has four archways at street level — two large ones for carts and two smaller pedestrian passages — with a Corinthian arcade above. The gate stands at the point where the road from Rome entered the city.

Today it sits at the edge of the old town on a busy through-road. The Roman stonework is weathered but complete, and the gate is best appreciated in the late afternoon when the light picks out the carved detail. A short walk northeast of the cathedral, it makes a natural bookend to the Porte Saint-André on the other side of town.
