Things to Do

Autun's Roman and Romanesque heritage is concentrated and walkable. The Cathedral of Saint-Lazare and its extraordinary Gislebertus sculpture is the centrepiece; the Musée Rolin next door has the original Eve from the cathedral plus fine Gallo-Roman artefacts. The two surviving Roman gates — Porte Saint-André and Porte d'Arroux — are a ten-minute walk apart at opposite ends of the old town. The vast Roman theatre sits on the hillside above, and the Temple of Janus stands in a field at the edge of town. For the geologically curious, the Pierre de Couhard — a massive pyramidal funerary monument on the hillside — is one of the stranger Roman survivals in France.
